Dr. Amit Ghosh, former Director of Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, and now Director, School of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Advanced Research, Ahmedabad, is acclaimed for his groundbreaking work on the development of cholera vaccine. His work also provided the clue on the origination of new clones of Vibrio cholerae. His research areas include molecular epidemiology, evolution of drug resistance and vaccine development in cholera. Dr. Ghosh is the recipient of several national and international awards in Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, which include Ranbaxy Award in Applied Medical Sciences, CSIR Shield for Process Technology 2002 (as a team Member) and Life Time Achievement Award of the Biotech Research Society of India. He is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and The National Academy of Sciences of India (NASI). He is also a Hon. Fellow of the Biotech Research Society of India. He was Vice-President, National Academy of Sciences, India during 2000-2002 and the President, Section of Biological Sciences 2005.
